Before the kids got pneumonia and bronchitis, we made a trip to Ikea the middle of February. This was our first trip and the closest location is in Charlotte, NC. I had my heart set on the Ektorp Couch and Chair in White. (yes, I do have 2 kids but you should know the cover is washable before you think I’m crazy) So, here is a little about our trip and my thoughts on Ikea and how life is with white furniture and 2 kids. I’ll even tell you about the little old lady that tried to help my husband since apparently I’m a weakling
We started out early and made a stop at Bojangles for breakfast. I was oh so happy to find out they had Heart Shaped Bo Berry Biscuits since it was the week of Valentine’s!
We arrived at Ikea much quicker than we thought we would despite 3 stops. Well, I was like a tourist in Paris. Actually, I’ve been to Paris and I don’t remember being this excited there. Yeah, I’m pretty sure at one point my husband just wanted to hide in our SUV. You see I had never been and my husband gets a discount (no he does not work at Ikea) and I just love a discount! And now I just love Ikea!
I knew exactly what I wanted and I think the furniture was every bit as pretty in person as it was in the catalog. The price is great and to all the people that say Ikea furniture is cheap I have to disagree. The furniture set we had prior to this cost 3 times as much as this set and was not any better.
So, we get our boxes and pay and thankfully I have a handy husband because I’m not really the putting furniture together type of girl. Well, for anybody that is thinking about making a trip and has an SUV….for reference, 1 couch, 1 big chair and the separate boxes of the covers can very comfortably fit in the back of an Expedition with the 2nd and 3rd row down.
Now, anybody that knows me will tell you that I’m not handy. I’m more of a get them to delivery it person Well, we are standing with all of these huge boxes by our SUV and my husband asks me to lift one side and help him. Yeah, it went downhill from there…..My hand got stuck in the box and Jason did not know this and he kept pushing the box in the Expedition and since my hand was stuck…..Yep, you guessed it…..in the Expedition I went with the box. Well, apparently it was quite a sight because this little elderly lady stopped and just as sweet as could be said, “Sir, do you need ME to help you get those boxes in your car” I don’t think we ever laughed so hard in our lives.
My husband looked at me and said “Honey I love you but thank God you have a college degree because if you ever had to do manual labor to survive you would not make it’ But the good news is all the boxes fit and we were on our way home so
we he could put it all together! But of course we stopped at Cracker Barrel first
Putting together the Couch and Chair
It was super simple and Jason had the couch and chair together in about 25 minutes. The covers took another 10 minutes or so to put on. It was not difficult to put the covers on. I would compare it to putting on pillowcases when you are changing your bed sheets — not difficult but annoying.
Life with 2 kids, a husband and White Couch
- It stays much cleaner that I thought it would but that is probably because I have newly imposed rules including not eating or drinking on the couch for the kids.
- Since it’s white, you can change your pillows according to seasons and holidays and it will always match. This is good for people that don’t like to commit to any color or pattern for too long.
- White = Bleachable…..enough said!
- Any piece of lint, hair or crumb is like a bug light. You can’t stop staring at it because it’s pretty noticeable. Your best friend will be a lint roller. This pretty much make it all better
Would I buy white again and do I plan to keep it?
Yes, I would buy white again and yes I do plan to keep it. But with that being said, I do like the blue nautical striped pattern you saw above in the picture of me sitting in the chair. I will most likely buy that cover to switch out later for a change. I think the Ektorp series from Ikea is every bit comparable to the Pottery Barn Basic Sofa. I think they look the same and I saved a grand or more by going to Ikea versus Pottery Barn. Of course, it does help I get a discount at Ikea.
I’ll check in later after I have washed the covers and have more months of wear and tear on them!
Anyone else have any Ektorp furniture from Ikea? How do you like? Tips on washing it?
